Meet Our Awesome Coaches

Coach Deborah Avery
DEBORAH AVERY

As president of New York Executive Coaching, Deborah understands that outstanding leadership and motivating people are crucial to any organization’s success. “Every company,” she says, “no matter its size, industry or philosophy needs effective leadership.” Deborah helps executives develop into leaders to ensure that the message they’re sending–via their words, demeanor and actions–delivers the results they desire. Because sometimes it really is “lonely at the top,” her fresh perspective offers executives new solutions to the challenges of leadership.

Deborah has gained valuable insight from over 25 years in law enforcement with the largest police department in the world: the NYPD. In the field, often under stressful circumstances, she developed her invaluable ability to not only identify challenges but create workable solutions. Her police career included a wide range of functions, including academy instructor, police officer on patrol and sergeant. Until her recent retirement from active duty, she was personnel officer for a patrol borough and was responsible for managing human resources, mentoring and developing leaders from over 5,000 uniformed and civilian employees.

Deborah’s knowledge of goal-setting, time-management and establishing action plans (holding people accountable without micromanaging) inspires her executive clients to do their best–and teaches them how to generate the same results with their own teams. Her intuitive style and strategic ability to think more than a few moves ahead enable her to motivate executives, directors and professionals who face the daily challenge of maintaining effective leadership within ever-changing organizations.

“I learned a universal truth about engaging others,” she says. “The coaching method of supervision motivates people to put forth their best effort and improves their performance. Once employees understand how they actually impact the final outcome, enhanced cooperation naturally follows.”

Deborah is co-producer and host of Coach World TV, which appears on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network. She is also a Mentor Coach for the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC). An accredited Professional Certified Coach with the International Coach Federation, she serves on the board of directors of the New York City chapter.

Coach JAN BOLICK
JAN BOLICK

Coach, author, speaker and founder of Business Class, Inc., Jan loves helping leaders and their teams achieve their goals. She loves the challenge, the process and the celebrations that are a result of the tools she provides for a take-charge, make-it-happen, inspiration style of leadership.

Jan graduated from the UNC School of Business, the Management Development Institute and the Young Executives Institute; and has earned three business and leadership coaching certifications. She has worked as a salesperson, trainer, coach, general manager, executive, board member and business owner. Through more than 30 years of experience with corporations, small businesses and non-profits, she has been exposed to a wide range of industries including communication, education, financial services, healthcare, publishing and real estate.
She explains her core belief about work this way: “I believe that work should be enjoyable–specially since most of us spend more time at work than anywhere else. The problem is people get, and often stay, bogged down with various task and people issues that zap their energy, morale and productivity. Often, just sounding it out with someone is enough to lift the load long enough to find a solution. And with that, most always comes a lift to all that was zapped. If only more people could have that in the workplace. Now they can–with the help of Roving Coach! And I’m thrilled to be a part of it!”
Jan holds memberships in the American Society for Training & Development, Blanket Orange County, the Chamber of Commerce, Green Plus and the International Coach Federation.
The mother of a grown son, Jan lives in Chapel Hill, NC, with her husband, Art, and Nellie the calico cat.

Coach ROD HIGGINBOTHAM L
ROD HIGGINBOTHAM

Currently living in Essex, Rod is Director of UK Operations for Roving Coach International and a Roving Coach. Rod has been involved in coaching and leadership development for many years, beginning in 1988 when he conceived the Management Development programme for Gould Inc. and presented it in the UK and USA to managers from seven countries. One of the modules was aimed at managing yourself and this began the interest in people taking charge of their own future.

When he returned to England, Rod spent a number of years in line management culminating in four years as Managing Director of a £15m business for Thermospectra Ltd. It gave him many insights into employee engagement and how easy it was to destroy if managers “neglected” their people duties when under pressures for the bottom line. He began to coach individuals at that point, helping them to determine how they could improve their work situation without merely expecting the company to make everything okay.

Returning to senior HR management in 2001 with Thermo Electron, Rod built and managed the HR function for the UK. He coached HR managers who worked in a complex matrix organisation and also a series of general managers who were geographically separated from their divisional leadership and struggled to balance their profit and loss obligations, the career aspirations of their teams and the demands of their employee groups. He was part of the first attempts in Thermo to use employee engagement tools based on the Net Promoter Score work developed by Fred Reichheld.

He started Ashcroft Business Consulting in 2007 to provide mentoring, coaching and business support to the owners and managers of SMEs. Along the way he achieved a formal coaching accreditation from Pharos Performance Ltd to back up the considerable hours he had undertaken coaching individuals at all levels.

To date Rod has coached leaders in IT, manufacturing, logistics, construction-related and professional services businesses.
